Motorcycle crash detection on a phone: what it can and can't do
Crash detection can get help to a rider who can't call for it. Here's how phone-based detection works, why false alarms are the hard part, and what it will never replace.
The nightmare for a solo rider is not the crash. It is the hours afterwards, off the road, out of sight, with a phone in a jacket pocket you cannot reach.
Phone-based crash detection exists for that gap. It is worth having, and it is worth understanding honestly — including what it cannot do.
What the phone can actually sense
Modern phones carry an accelerometer and a gyroscope sampling many times per second. During a recorded ride, those give a continuous picture of how the bike is moving.
A crash has a recognisable shape in that data:
- An impact spike — deceleration far beyond anything braking produces, often in a direction the bike does not normally accelerate.
- Attitude change — the phone’s orientation changing violently and then settling somewhere it should not be.
- Stillness afterwards — the pattern that distinguishes a crash from a hard event you rode out of. After a pothole, riding continues. After a crash, movement stops.
That last condition does most of the real work. An impact alone is ambiguous; an impact followed by thirty seconds of nothing is not.
Why the countdown matters more than the detection
The naive design fires an alert the moment it detects an impact. That design is unusable, because it burns trust in exactly the way that gets a feature switched off.
If your phone slips out of a tank bag at a fuel stop and your partner gets an emergency alert, you turn crash detection off that evening and it protects you never again. False alarms are not a cosmetic problem — they are the failure mode that removes the feature from your life.
So the sequence is:
- Detect a candidate event.
- Confirm the rider has gone still.
- Alarm on the phone, loudly, with a visible countdown.
- If the rider cancels, nothing happens and nobody is told.
- If the countdown expires, contacts are alerted with the last known position, and riders in your group are told.
The countdown is long enough to fish a phone out of a jacket and short enough to matter. Everything else in the feature is tuning around that.
What it sends, and to whom
When an alert fires, the useful payload is small and specific:
- That the rider appears to have crashed and did not cancel.
- Where — the last confirmed GPS position, with a map link.
- When.
- Who — the rider’s name, and where possible the vehicle they are on.
That goes to the emergency contacts you nominated, and to the riders in your group if you are on a group ride. Group notification matters: the rider behind you is often ten minutes away, which makes them the fastest possible help, far faster than anyone at home.
The honest limitations
Anyone selling crash detection as a safety net owes you this list.
It cannot detect every crash. A low-speed slide with the phone cushioned in a padded pocket may not generate a detectable signature. A gentle tip-over at walking pace should not trigger it, and does not.
It needs a connection to alert. Detection is local; sending is not. Where there is no coverage there is no alert, and no app can change that. If you ride genuinely remote country, carry a satellite messenger — that is the correct tool, and it is not expensive relative to the consequences.
It needs the phone alive. Battery dead, no detection. Ride with a charging lead.
It does nothing preventative. It is not ABS, it is not traction control, and it does not make you safer while riding. It shortens the time between a crash and someone knowing about it. That is all — and that alone is worth a great deal.
It cannot assess injury. It knows you stopped moving. It does not know whether you are unconscious or whether you are standing beside the bike swearing at a broken lever.
Who should have it on
Solo riders. The whole reason the feature exists. Nobody is behind you.
The last rider in a group. Groups fragment. The rider at the back can be out of sight for a long time before anyone circles back, which is why we pair crash detection with live position sharing so the group can see when a rider has stopped moving even without a crash.
Anyone riding roads without traffic. A crash on a busy road is found in minutes. A crash on a good back road at 7am on a Tuesday might not be.
Commuters, honestly. Most crashes happen close to home, on familiar roads, at ordinary speeds.
Ours is on by default, with alerts going to your nominated contacts and co-riders. It can be turned off in settings, though we would rather you left it on and cancelled the occasional false alarm.
What still matters more
Technology after the fact is the last line. In front of it:
- Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back. Still the single highest-value safety habit for a solo rider, and it costs nothing.
- Share your live position with someone on long solo rides.
- Ride within sight of the rider behind you, or agree corner-marking so nobody is ever unaccounted for.
- Carry ID and any medical information where a stranger will find it — an in-case-of-emergency card in your jacket, not just on a locked phone.
Crash detection covers the case where all of that was not enough. Set it up, test the alert once so your contacts know what it looks like, and then hope it never has anything to do.
Questions riders ask
How does motorcycle crash detection work on a phone?
The app reads the phone's accelerometer and gyroscope during a ride, looking for a signature of a crash — a sharp deceleration or impact spike followed by an absence of normal movement. When it sees one, it starts a countdown, and if you do not cancel, it alerts your emergency contacts with your last known position.
Will it produce false alarms?
Occasionally, yes. A dropped phone, a hard pothole, or a phone slipping out of a tank bag can all resemble an impact. That is exactly why there is a cancel countdown before anyone is contacted, and why the threshold is tuned to be conservative.
Does crash detection work without mobile signal?
Detection works offline because it is local sensor processing, but sending the alert needs a connection. If you ride in areas with no coverage, a satellite messenger is the tool for that job, not a phone app.
Is crash detection a replacement for telling someone where I am going?
No. Telling a person your route and expected return time is still the single most effective thing you can do as a solo rider. Crash detection is a backstop for when that plan is not enough.
